Wallenius Wilhelmsen has made a pivotal announcement regarding its fleet enhancement strategy, confirming the upsizing of four Shaper Class vessels currently under construction at Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu). Originally designed to accommodate 9,300 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs), these vessels will now be expanded to approximately 11,700 CEUs, marking them as the largest Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) ever built.
This strategic decision is integral to Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions across its operations. Xavier Leroi, EVP & COO of Shipping Services, stated,
These upsized Shaper vessels are purpose-built to meet our operational needs and trading patterns. Designed for net-zero from day one, they will deliver significant efficiencies in fuel consumption and emissions compared to our existing fleet, while offering unmatched capacity and the highest ramp strength available in the market.
The new vessels will play a crucial role in Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s integrated net-zero service, scheduled to launch in 2027. This innovative offering will encompass all stages of finished vehicle transportation from factories to consumers, utilizing the company’s extensive land-based logistics network to create a seamless service experience.
Pia Synnerman, EVP & CCO, emphasized the positive impact of these enhancements on the company’s service capabilities, stating,
This initiative allows us to further improve our cargo handling capacity and fuel efficiency, aligning with the future needs expressed by our customers
The four upsized vessels will incorporate essential design features from the Shaper Class, including a dual-fuel engine capable of running on methanol, enhanced ramp strength, and a strong emphasis on energy efficiency, safety, and crew welfare.
The first Shaper Class vessels are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2026, with the upsized versions commencing deliveries in late 2027.
This significant expansion of Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s fleet not only underscores the company’s leadership in sustainable maritime transport but also sets a new standard for efficiency and capacity in the shipping industry.
